TASO Releases Information on Open Carry Law

Texas Open Carry Law

Texas Association of Sports Officials

The TASO office has received several inquiries concerning the new Texas Open Carry Law and junior, middle and high school athletic events. The fact is the Open Carry law has little or no effect on UIL and private school sporting events as the following provisions have been in place since the Concealed Carry Law when into effect:

  • 46.035 of the Texas Penal Code prohibits carrying of handguns and other weapons on the premises where a high school, collegiate or professional sporting or interscholastic event is taking place.
  • 46.03, Texas Penal Code specifically prohibits handguns on the physical premises of a school, grounds or buildings on which an activity sponsored by a school is being conducted, or in a school transportation vehicle.
